I suggested several items, like:

Add a few "Eurobulker" ships,
Advertisement, trips from Europe to Australia for higher profits
reason being that shorter trips eat up too many days in the harbor.
zootier suggested adding a container ship like the Encounterbay.
it was suggested to basically run at full speed except for trips ending at x.1 or so days to throttle that down to xx.0
Since for the most part the savings in fuel are eaten up by the loss of time and drive down the average result per day.
furthermore to pay attention to load times of the particular ship
and avoid slow loaders like the "Patroclus" (6 days versus most are 2 days)
In this connection it was pointed out by zootier that 6 days is a realistic value for an old break bulk freighter and its one of the reason that container ships are now so prevalent.
This was countered by me that while even my small coasters had loads that took almost a week to load they also had loads that only took a few hours and fueling sometimes only an hour.
But in the game this value is fixed, which in turn makes a 6 day turn around unrealistic and a money loser...
In that connection it was also discussed that you will spend considerably more time in harbor then the 2 days load/unload (or whaterver value is assigned to your chosen ship) indicate, since the computer always acts at 24:00 hours
It says: you have arrived (2400) next day: enter(2400)next day: ready to load(2400)next day: ready to leave(2400) next day: leave (2400)
so when adding a lot of short runs or secondary freights you may well be wasting a lot of time
Also the question of GT /GRT (BRT in german) versus TDW/DWT was touched upon. GT are strictly a volume measurement for taxing/manning/fee purposes only tdw are weight and strictly speaking even then not all payload, since tdw includes fuel/coffee/beer/ supplies and what not.
I am sure I forgot something but that is about the substance of the convo sofar.

so, i have played more, and the only problem was, that i was in a low price time. So i didn't get much money if i charter my ships. But now i get much money because the low Price time is over, and so my profit is now good.

thx for the good tips Smile

hoi,
coaster's are small ships that run along the coast. Mainly in northsea or baltic sea.
Their advantage (at least in real life): low prices, low costs, low consumption, can use each port.
Their disadvantage: low load

in german:

Moin,

hi bearsie, one question:is a 135m long container vessel (feedership) built by sietas still a coaster?some days ago i read about a 157m long containerfeeder in the baltic.in my opinion all vessels over 100m long are no coasters anymore, the modern coasters have already 4500 tdw.brgds mooringman

I quite agree there Mooringman! I think that's why the PR folks call them feeders and "short sea traders".
2000 tdw is about the limit in my mind, after that its just a small freighter.
Many freighters trading to the Med and Canada in the 50's and 60's were only about 2000 to 3500 tons.
These big ships eliminated many small harbors and increase truck traffic, sort of defeating the whole purpose of coasters...
