yes you are right, this should be ok, but start poc from a reboot (I assume you have done this), so no leftoverers remain in the grafic card.

Here's the 3dmark file:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~schido/poc/schido_x800xt_18.04.2008.3dr

Not a great score (only 2013), but in range with comparable systems, is what 3dmark said

Here's the system information page:

And switching off the radar and speed didn't help with starting from xxl either, again after about 10 secs, it locks up.

I see that you use:

Desktop Width 1600 px
Desktop Height 1200 px

try to switch the standard resiolution to 1280 x 1024 before you start pocxxl and pocsim3dii.
, this saves lots of memory in the Grafic card, which can explain the effect,
SOm memory might be needed when xxl is running in the background and therefore be available for pocsim3dii,
so lets try this next.,

I was already switching to 1024x768 before starting poc.

try to switch of MIRROR and SHADOW in the pocsim3dii admin menue, then save and start,
then a different not complex water shader is used.

also here some comparison tables:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_ATI_graphics_processing_units
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Nvidia_Graphics_Processing_Units

iI cannot see why the 850 is not working, but its also difficult to get a new card, as the smallest is a x2900 currently in the market.

Nope, same effect: Starting sim3d2 on its own works well, and from xxl it locks up again.

It's not the x850 by the way, but X800XT PE

Could the problem be that the card is only DirectX 9.0b compliant (Pixel Shader 2.0b & Vertex Shader 2.0) and not DirectX 9.0c (Shader Model 3.0, GPGPU)

I dont think its the version problem though we use 9.0c but only pixel shader 2.0,

here a comparison with 6800

http://www.hartware.de/review_400.html

and we have tested it with the 5800 ultra (I just repeated the test when calling from poc xxl).

I will take a look on the pocxxl calling sequence, maybe there is a problem with the calling sequence e.g. stack, please check also the current version of pocxxl.

usually problem arise with notebooks as there the graphic cards have a reduced performance and share memory.

can you try to start

dxcapsviewer and send me the outputfile,
there I can see all detals of the card,

the program comes with direct x 9.0c (SDK) I am not sure if its also in the runtime only version, but you can download the direct x 9 sdk from microsoft in any case also.

one idea which came up,

try to switch back with ALT-TAB to the pocxxl app and see if there is a message box around, (message boxes from the system can almost halt any direct x 3d ),
we hd such a problem with realtec audio, maybe any message is popping up in the background which cauees the problem.

also temporarly disable any antivirus software ( I remember A kasparsky doing some periodic tests and having problems with direct x for example).

also try to switch back using ALT-ENTER to the screen modus quickly after the load beguns, and see what happens.

When i'm really quick after choosing the level, then i can alt tab out sim3d2.
It only shows the steer by hand/tug dialog of xxl, and still locks up (It looks like it justs keeps the processor at 100%)

That was with virusscanner off, scanner is avast, that even has a switch to check for full screen apps before showing popups

1. the lock, how does it look,

a very low fps (water still moving or nothing reacts ,.
mouse cursor still moving or also locked ?)

2. an other idea, when you start pocsim3dii and go to the container habrour (the first in the menue); can you see the video on the car screen,

if not install the indeo codec pack (5.1) and repeat,

The lockup looks like an extremely low framerate (almost no refresh), nothing moving, wave and engine sound still going on, no mouse cursor visible (starts in free cam mode, locked to the mouse?)

Had to look hard for the movie you meant, but found the drive in movie theater eventually, and yes the movie works.
