Some questions from a new player

I just bought a gold license and started playing XXL.

I have two questions:

1) What is the function of the escort vessel?
I tried the option but doesn't seem to do anything at a first glance.

2) How do you use tankers?
Do I have to send them to specific ports or is there something else that I don't understand?

the escort vessels reduce the risk of a pirate attack

the tankers currently work most like a tramp ship.

Hmmm - you can only load tankers in ports where cargoes for tankers are offered. There are many different cargoes for Tankers in the game (crude oil, diesel, acid, gas, wine, fruit juice, jet fuel etc.), but poc distinguishes only between tanker and freighter/pax. So it is up to your honesty to load only suitable cargo to your type of tanker.
