here a study that will make your eyes water! Shocked
But in the middle it has an interesting ton mile per gallon figure
based on ship size, it shows that this number almost doubles as size increases

Hi Bearsie,

I was one of the very interested in the fuel consumption formula, and the whole topic where we discussed this is:

I think that you are perfectly right. The problem is: how do you convert KW to actual speed? After all we are interested in the ship speed, or in the opposite (how much fuel do we burn in a day to go at a certain speed)?

I am not a maritime engineer, so I am now just guessing.

We should take into account for this converion:
- Total displacement: i.e. ship's weight plus cargo weight: an empty ship consumes less that a full ship.
- Form factor: given the same energy, a long and smooth shape will go faster than e.g. a cube shape. I am putting in this "form factor" also values like propeller efficiency.

Unfortunately there are some non-linearities in the involved formulas, e.g. the form of a ship in the water depends on the cargo, i.e in the total displacement. Also, I am pretty sure the form factor depends also on speed.

So, ship engineers out there, can you give any help on how to convert engine power to actual speed?
