Thats right, both companies upgrade the 200 m vessels with an additional 28m section. Means total 8000 cars space. _________________ Timer

Thanks, Herr Mooringman (Festmacher?)
As I recall, in the 60s a company named Toepfer (green ships) used to haul VW's from Emden to the US and such in Bulk carriers with "movable" decks and coal from the US back to Europe.
Talking of the baltic.... on the MS Hein von Bargen (850 tdw) we used to haul cars (DKW's ! ) from Hamburg to Sweden. Since she was a shelterdecker we could have 3 layers, alas not anywhere near 8000 cars !!! Maybe 80 or so ... hahaha
If memory serves correct Blohm and Voss built 2 large coasters in the 60's ( I forgot the names) that had a special 4th deck above the hatches made with grating, that was the high tech idea of hauling cars on coastal ships at the time. I believe those were the only coaster B&V ever build.... _________________ Frohe Reise, Bearsie. |

hi,in the 60s and 70s another company named Bolten did the same,carried VW cars over the atlantic and brought bulk cargo back to europe.most of the ships were build at Flender shipyard in lübeck.some other companies did the same.in the baltic there were two companies involved in the car transport from lübeck to scandinavia: Bischoff and Lübeck Line.today everything is going with special car carriers or ferries,all roro ships.brgds mooringman |

Emden is more or less a "factory" port of VW.
Bremerhaven is with 1.5 million units in 2005 the second port in Europe behind Zeebruegge with about 1.7 million units in 2005.
@mooringman:
I think Lübeck is the gate to the baltic for Germany. With all the ferries and Ro/Ro services. I have seen a lot of cargo discharged in Bremerhaven, trucked to Lübeck and then to the Baltic states. _________________ Timer

I added Emden and Lübeck to my game
Thanks for all the current info, guys
I think Bolten and Bischoff are still in business, Bischoff being the ones from Bremen that have names like Bremer Handel, Bremer Kauffmann u.s.w assuming I got the right Bischoff, I have one of their ships in the game , Bremer Uranus _________________ Frohe Reise, Bearsie. |

hi,that is the right bischoff company from bremen.the most coasters are in the norway-europe service with foreign flag and cheap crew,as usual.the vessel "Bremer Uranaus" was in the container feeder service to st. petersburg,but i don't know the actual service.they don't carry cars anymore.as far as i know the Bolten company has containerships.brgds mooringman |
