It’s really fun to read the messages and voting’s, it seems that we all have our own strategy.
The action I choose is always get round, what do you do?

Nice idea to open a topic on a strategic decision and I believe you what people to explain there choice, anyway I did a shown below…
Always pass through: Crazy and suicidal… Always get round: This could be a strategic decision that will work for a lot of you. However it’s not what I do and I think that I ignore around 3/4 storm warnings when playing POC XXL.
My decision on passing or avoiding a storm is based on the following list:
First of all the decision is based on the Beauport rate…
8bft: Sometimes around, 9bft: Sometimes through and 10bft or higher: Always around
Second decisive factor, in combination with the first, is the vessel condition…
Good/medium condition: Always through 8bft storms and Poor condition: Always around 8bft storms
What good will, the decision to travel through a storm with a poor condition vessel just to save some time, bring you, when your vessel doesn’t survive the storm…
Third factor for me is the time limit of the voyage with high penalties…
Good/medium condition: Sometimes through 9bft storm when the travel around time in days endangers the time limit and the penalty per day is very high. Time limits on passengers in containerships are out of the question in this decision of cores (not main cargo). No matter the time limit is short I never travel through 10bft or higher storms, because the risk of getting stuck in the storm or sinking gets to high and this is worth taking the penalty…
Additional factors, which I sometimes forget to keep in mind, are the maintenance, repair costs and bunker capacity of a vessel with low storms…
When the time saved running through the storm isn’t worth the repair costs…
When the prolongation of the storm isn’t worth the additional maintenance cost…
When the prolongation of the storm endangers the bunker capacity on long voyages…
This is what I do and just an opinion of course!
Cheers, Novex |

It depends on the ship condition. over 70% I go through.
I go round under 70% or by overloaded ship. |

Beaufort 8, go through.
Beaufort 9, go around unless in a hurry.
Beaufort 10+, go around.

My ships are normally kept at as high a condition as possible, so there are normally no risk of passing. But if one accidentially should be lower then 60% i only pass at 8/9 beaufort. |

Hello,
In my opinion it´s a question of the condition.
I always let drive my ships with max speed and also pass through storms
8-10 beaufort. But i pay attention to the condition of my ships.
My ships have always a condition better than 95%.

hi,good seemanship is to avoid damage on ship, cargo and crew.but there are a lot of so called "navigators" in these days, they go through a typhoon with 20 knots with a big containership and they lost almost 5oo containers.believe it or not,its true!!!for these guys is the holding of the given ETA the most important thing.in the poc game i mostly pass through, because all my vessels are in good condition.but be careful with low cost ships under 70%.i saw already fishes from the bridge... brgds mooringman |

It seems that I’m a chicken , that always choose round. And my vessels (high or special) use to be 90% or higher in condition, maybe I should try pass through sometimes.
Howevery it's nice too see the respons

Hi Jocke,
I think it isn´t wrong to drive around storms, i think your maintainance costs are surely lower than mine

I always pass tru if the ship condition is above 80% if below 80% I may go around since the damage is too costly... _________________ Frohe Reise, Bearsie. |

My ships are always in the best condition possible, always using the highest setting for maintanance.
Therefore I normally go straight through all storms, no matter how strong they are. Even beafaurt 12 i go straight through.....
However, a few exceptions!
1. Overloaded ship with up to 15%. I consider the storm, and available time, go around if time allows it!
2. Overloaded ship with more than 15%. Always go around. It is not worth loosing the ship.
3. A ship going through its second, third or more storms on a voyage. Consider the ships condition before going through the storm. If it feels worth the risk, I go for it, if not I go around.
4. A high value cargo when time is very good. Usually go around.
5. A ship that is much damaged og in poor condition (less than 70%). Go around if time allows it.
edit:
And yes! Sometimes that gamble means loosing a ship or some cargo! But I consider that worth the risk, as I mostly keep tight time schedules, not allowing detours or stops. Late cargo means loosing points, and its less bad to loose a few points for a lost ship once in a while, than loosing a point for late cargo on every trip!
Loosing a few containers overboard an overloaded ship never give you loosing points.
If I loose a ship, i just buy a new one!
Seamen lost, ..... too bad.... Thats life! ;-D |
