I just compiled a small overview about the development of Ports Of Call and derivatives as new versions and boxed versions come out- feel free for discussions:

I see that PoCXXL and Pocsim3DII will be compatible/interact. Just like POCSML and Pocsim3DII.
Will POCSML and PoCXXL also be combinable? Say you ship 5000 containers from china to europe and you distribute them with your smallwater ships inland? (would also be cool to have such sort of "hub" function in XXL too).
And will you be able to keep the system requirement low for 3DII? The new version looks better than the old one and I'm still running at the same (although slow 9fps) bitrate. Would be appreciated I think if it's possible to optimize this further. _________________ Freight Containers In The Port Of Antwerp |

yes I will couple xml and xxl also, this will be a next step.
We optimize pocsim3dii further, next an update will bring faster start times (by delaying unsued elements for a later load),
after this I will work on the communication concept (already in work), so you dont need to close pocsim3dii between the sim processes,
To increase the framerate this is more difficult, but we constantly optimize this also, though if you will try the new New York harbour from poc2008 deluxe edition, with my 6800 nvidia I only have 3-4 fps but on a new machine its 40 fps with the ati2900 or 8800 cards. NY has now about 1.5mio polygons.
-- to speed up switch off mirror and shadow effects in the admin menue this helps very much and also switch of the radar view (you still can flip between with F3)- |

When you couple SML and XXL, will the freight system keep an eye on the amount of freight for the different destinations?
For example:
I load in Hong Kong. I can easily load 5000 TUE for Rotterdam, as that's a sea port. Loading 5000 TUE for the dutch inland tri-modal terminal Tilburg for example would be crazy, as I need a lot of ships to get the containers on their final position.
So what I was thinking. The final load may look like:
- 2000 TUE for zeebrugge (sea port)
- 2000 TUE for rotterdam (sea port)
- 200 TUE for tilburg (inland)
- 300 TUE for stijn (inland)
But will the freight system assure that the loads for the inland terminals are offered in smaller portions? Imo a very important aspect of integration of SML and XXL. _________________ Freight Containers In The Port Of Antwerp |

yes, the inland system has a different freight system, with different goods of course also, that is typical crago like coal, grind, machiones but also containers of course, and this can be a part of the bigger system -- but the combination of both is not yet defined completely, we have to do some research. The inner system is stable by itself already. |

What would be a good system (I think) is to add global import and export numbers to all harbours. In combination with the goods listings (extended for import and export seperately) you can easily calculate the available freights. _________________ Freight Containers In The Port Of Antwerp |

these will be new products (we really need new fundings !!)
but we will make some combination prices, as you have already the pocsim3dii part, this also can be used for sml, so you have a smaller price,
poconline will have a monthly fee, but we dont know the exact details yet - simular to other browser online games currently on the web.
here we have the same, later you can also use pocsim3dii (part of platinum). for getting status points for example. |

Well, I wouldn't mind paying something extra for an additional integrated SML version. I however hope that all ideas brought forward on this forum for improving XXL will be added to XML too.
BTW: Is the SML version exactly the same as XXL, or is it, just like the astragon version completely 3D based? As I prefer the trading part and not the 3D sailing part (Shipsim does a much better job for that imo but that was created as a professional learning tool, so completely different base than PoC). _________________ Freight Containers In The Port Of Antwerp |

its based on the XXL version, in 2D for playing it also on older PCs and I have more possiblities for the user interface.
But like with the XXL you can control the 3d simulator (also the 2d topview works of course).
The user interafec of SML is similar, but KARA has new levels, and other things change in the captain wall, for example, you can clean the ship etc.
of course quite different events will happen.
The complete 3d versions as poc2008 was a demand on the large market and vendors to have all in 3D, but this costs much efford to achive the same as in the classic interface and needs faster machines.
I personally like more a combination approach which is also more like reality (go to a shipbroker and look at their interface - all in 3d with tables diagramms etc.) but of course for the simulator part 3d is good to have (though I watched most switching to radar view (F3) and then back to 2d ) for manouevering. |
